about the festival 2009
The concert held on the banks of the river (famous for its barramundi fishing) on Saturday night will feature a collaborative performance with the dynamic Nicky Bomba from Melbourne in collaboration with B2M from the Tiwi Islands.

B2M which stands for Bathurst to Melville, the name of the two islands that make of the Tiwi Islands is a band made up of 6 young Indigenous men that sing about the issues facing all young people such as drugs, alcohol and suicide.

Their music is an R ‘n’ B pop with a traditional kind of twist to it. The lyrics in their songs come from life experience growing up in an Aboriginal community and seeing first hand the effects of drugs and alcohol on their own people. Educating the kids of the future through their music and encouraging people to make a change in their lives is what keeps this band going.

Already in the bands short history they have achieved what takes some band some years to achieve, one of their first songs recorded Mahlia has been featured by National Broadcaster ABC as part of a program on mental health. Audiences have been completely blown away by the bands fresh positive approach. B2M have performed along side the now famous Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, ( who performed at the Merrepen Festival last year) the Saltwater Band, and have just released their first 6 track CD EP recorded live at the Monsoon Sessions in Darwin.
B2M will be performing with the accomplished and much loved Nicky Bomba and friends from Melbourne.  With a passion for culture and people, Nicky has traveled extensively, immersing himself in the music and culture of places such as Ethiopia, Morocco, Jamaica, Europe and his birthplace Malta. Consequently, the music produced by this peace-lovin’ troubadour is a melting pot of fun, adventure and exotic sounds of the people and places he loves.

After years of working with bands from Africa to the Middle East and honing his reggae, ska and mento expertise, Nicky has drawn on his musical journeys and philosophies to produce his first ever solo work.
His new album, PLANET JUICE, has been a long time dream where he gets to play all the instruments and ventures where he likes. “It’s been a cathartic and strengthening adventure.  I felt like a kid in a candy shop when was in the studio. Old songs that never had a home swing alongside new songs inspired by the journey. The possibilities are endless really.” Nicky has built a solid reputation in the music industry via many projects including his funk reggae ensemble BOMBA, conducting the 30pce MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRA, playing drums on John Butler’s award-winning SUNRISE OVER SEA to Artistic Producer for the MULTICULTURAL ARTS VICTORIA VISIBLE project. His festival performance will be a combination of solo and random guests and if you’ve seen him live you will know he has an uncanny way of raising the vibrations of any audience.
